since the prehistoric era

History

According to archaeological discoveries, Amorgos has been inhabited since the prehistoric era. There used to be three important cities on the island: Minoa, Aegiali and Arkessini. During the Roman years it was a place of exile, in the Byzantine years part of the Province of Islands. Afterwards it passed to the Francs and then to Venice, and later faced pirate raids and Turkish sovereignty. It took part in the Greek Revolution of 1821 and was united with Greece in 1832.

Going around the island today you can still see remains from ancient times. The Archaeological Museum in Chora exhibits remnants of the Minoan civilisation that existed here more than 4000 years ago.

Nature

Amorgos stretches out as a long and narrow island on the south-east corner of the Cyclades. It is wild and beautiful, with high mountains falling steeply into the sea on the east side. The highest mountain, Krikelos at 821 m, dominates the north-western part; others are Prophet Elias at 699 m and Korakas at 528 m.

In the northern part there is a nature reserve stretching from just outside the village of Langada to the northern tip of the island. In the three biggest valleys — Aegiali, Katapola and Kalotaritissa — olive groves are the main feature, while the mountains are covered with juniper, cactus and bushes in many colours.

The first thing that hits you when you arrive is the scent of herbs. Amorgos is well known for its rich flora and its many exceptional medicinal plants; it is said that the island got its name from the flower “Amorgos”, used in antiquity to produce a gossamer tunic coloured deep red.

Herbs & aromatics

Mint, basil, chamomile, fennel, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme and yellow gammander.
